(NYT38) WASHINGTON -- Feb. 25, 2003 -- IRAQ-U.S.-GERMANY -- Angela Merkel, leader of the German Christian Democratic Union, speaking on Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, at Georgetown University in Washington. Merkel, a no-nonsense physicist who grew up in East Germany and entered politics as a protege of Helmut Kohl, the former chancellor, has challenged Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's unyielding opposition to military action against Iraq, most pointedly in an Op-Ed article in The Washington Post last week, headlined, "Schroeder Doesn't Speak for All Germans.'' That drew rebukes from members of Schroeder's governing coalition. (Paul Hosefros/The New York Times)*LITE*
