(NYT38) NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Feb. 23, 2003 -- MARDI-GRAS-BEADS -- Few things go so quickly from trinkets to treasure to trash. Mardi Gras beads, made from cheap plastic and cotton thread in Chinese factories, begin to appreciate as the first of the Carnival parades lumber through New Orleans. Stefan Rodriguez of the Krewe of Pontchartrain tossed beads Saturday, Feb. 22, 2003, to spectators at a parade in New Orleans, La. Parades lead up to Mardi Gras, March 4 this year.
