(NYT3) CLEAR LAKE, Texas -- Feb. 2, 2003 -- SHUTTLE-TEXAS-REACT-2 -- Parishioners at the Grace Community Church in Clear Lake, Texas, Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, watch a videotape interview of the space shuttle Columbia's commander Rick D. Husband, who had attended services at Grace Community Church, as people flocked to churches around the nation Sunday to grieve for the lost crew of the shuttle Columbia. About 2,000 people filled Grace Community Church, a 10-minute drive from the Houston Space Center. For many residents the shuttle disaster on Saturday, Feb. 1, reopened wounds from 17 years ago, when the shuttle Challenger exploded 73 seconds after takeoff. They also expressed fear for the future of the space program. (Keith Meyers/The New York Times)
