(NYT9) MOSHAV BEIT ZAIT, Israel -- Feb. 1, 2003 -- ISRAEL-SHUTTLE-REACT -- Arianne Cohen and her children watch a special news edition on Israeli television at their home in Moshav Beit Zait, Israel, Saturday morning, Feb. 1, 2003, as NASA declared an emergency and feared the worst after losing communication with space shuttle Columbia as the ship and its seven astronauts soared over Texas several minutes before its expected landing Saturday. The scrambled rescue units were also searching for signs of the crew, which included the first Israeli to fly on the shuttle, former combat pilot Col. Ilan Ramon, shown on television.
