(NYT3) GULF OF MEXICO -- Jan. 27, 2003 -- SCI-GULF-SHIPWRECK-1 -- Brett Phaneuf, a marine archaeologist at Texas A&M University, examines a piece of planking that was brought up from a newly explored shipwreck in 1,200-foot-deep water. Archaeologists are trying to find out the history (and even the name) of a ship that sank off in the Gulf of Mexico not far from the mouth of the Mississippi. But so far, all they have experienced is "bad voodoo" in efforts to learn anything about the ship. (Kenneth Chang/The New York Times)
