(NYT37) NEW YORK -- Jan. 3, 2003 -- NY-POLICE-SHOOTING-3 -- For the New York Police Department, the new year began with an exceptional set of events: four fatal shootings of civilians by officers in just the first two days. But as police officials grappled Friday with the many lingering questions that surround the recent cases, experts said the shootings obscured a larger reality: that the New York police had been largely successful at curtailing unwarranted gunfire by officers. At a press conference in Manhattan on Friday, Jan. 3, 2003, the guns that the police say were carried by people shot in three of the cases were displayed: two 9-millimeter pistols and an air pistol that fires BB's or pellets.
