(NYT50) NEW YORK -- Jan. 24, 2003 -- COLD-WEATHER-8 -- A tug boat comes to the aid of a commuter ferry which got mired in the ice just off Manhattan in the Hudson River, Friday, Jan. 24, 2003. Bitter cold gripped the eastern two-thirds of the country Friday, choking northern harbors with ice, threatening citrus crops and setting more record low temperatures. Up the coast, the increasingly icy waters shut down some ferries to Boston and New York, forcing commuters into trains and buses. (Keith Meyers/The New York Times)
