(NYT7) LOS ANGELES -- Nov. 30, 2002 -- HOLLYWOOD-CEMETERY -- The gates of Hollywood Memorial, which is adjacent to Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, were padlocked in the late 90's. The crematory lay in shambles, and the cemetery bordered on bankruptcy. Although it was the resting place of Hollywood greats like Rudolph Valentino and the gangster Bugsy Siegel, it was so run-down that relatives were disinterring their loved ones and burying them elsewhere. Then along came Tyler Cassity, the new president of Hollywood Forever and his brother Brent in 1998, demure scions of a Missouri funeral home family and an inspiration for the hit television series "Six Feet Under." The western mausoleum is being expanded to four stories and will be among the tallest in the world. Part of the grounds at Hollywood Memorial in November. (Monica Almeida/The New York Times)
