(NYT17) UNDATED -- Feb. 12, 2001 -- SCI-ASTEROID-LANDING -- A NASA spacecraft ended its yearlong mission orbiting the asteroid Eros Monday by defying the odds and becoming the first man-made instrument to land on such a body. The landing on Eros ended a five-year mission in which the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft became the first to explore an asteroid in detail, sending back more than 160,000 pictures and so much data that scientists say it will take decades to analyze it all. In this image of Eros, the oblong formation is about 30 feet across. (NASA/The New York Times)
