(NYT8) DHORI, India -- Feb. 9, 2001 -- INDIA-QUAKE -- On January 26, an earthquake struck India that left up to 100,000 people dead. Dhori, a village in India populated with Hindus, Muslims and what some in India consider members of the lower castes, all clawed together in the rescue efforts. Walji Bhai, 54, right, a Hindu village chief and B.S. Saneja, 38, a relief worker, pose for photographs. Behind them are villagers living in shelters of plastic and wood constructed after their homes were destroyed. (John F. Burns/The New York Times)
