(NYT11) NEW YORK -- Feb. 5, 2001 -- VIOLIN-PARTNERSHIP -- Five years ago the violinist Robert McDuffie found the instrument of his dreams: a 1735 Guarneri del Gesu violin known as the Ladenburg, whose list of players includes the 19th-century virtuosos Nicolo Paganini and Ludwig Spohr. It came with a sheaf of papers attesting to its pedigree; it was in mint condition. And the price was $3.5 million. On Monday a group of 16 investors calling itself 1735 Del Gesu Partners, L.P., officially purchased the Ladenburg from its owner for the express purpose of leasing it to McDuffie. McDuffie plays his newly financed violin, Monday. (Nancy Siesel/The New York Times)
