(NYT3) NEW YORK -- Feb. 2, 2001 -- NY-PHILOSOPHERS -- While New York is not quite Athens on the Hudson yet, over the last decade many of the world's most prominent philosophers have been moving here, drawn by the chance to interact with one another as well as by the relatively high salaries offered by area universities trying to polish their reputations, and the city's cultural life. Stephen Schiffer, professor of philosophy at New York Univeristy, seated in blue shirt at head of table, during a recent seminar on language at NYU. Due to the large attendance many students had to sit just outside the door. (Justin Lane/The New York Times)
