Two felucca fishing boats pass each other as they leave their moorings, in Messina, Italy, June 17, 2024. This particular boat has a tower of about 20 meters from which the boat is commanded and the swordfish is spotted and a bridge of about 30 meters on the bow, from which the fish is harpooned. Swordfish fishing with boats called feluccas has been practiced for centuries in the Strait of Messina (and it is also the only place where it is practiced), it is a fishing that is practiced only from the month of June to mid-August, a period in which the swordfishes are more present in the strait and the weather is favorable for this type of particular boats. Due to sea warming and the consequent reduction in fish to be caught, this ancient activity is at risk of extinction despite being an eco-sustainable fishery that respects the ecosystem.
