Ethiopia, 02 November 2013 A local eldery woman tend to a sorghum plantation. They were lent the land for a year by Karaturi. Karuturi Global is one of several investors to have leased an estimated 600,000 hectares from the Ethiopian Government to farm various crops such as maize, soya beans, sugar and cotton. The acquiring of land by foreigners in the Ethiopian western province of Gambella has become controversial as human rights groups report forced displacement of villages and the loss of traditional hunting and gathering sites. On the other hand, the Ethiopian Government says this program of ???villagisation??? is unrelated to the farms and is needed to provide essential services to the population of Gambella. The Indian companies suggest that land is not a scarce resource, that there is enough for everyone, and that they are bringing crucial investment into the country. The reality witnessed though is that few of the farms are succeeding to make a profit and investors are reported to be pulling out. Reason sited range from inadequate initial investment, poor choice of crops for the land, poor management, flooding. Quote from anonymous Ilya villager (Ilya lie opposite the Karaturi farm): ??sWhen we try to take the maize lying on the ground we are fined 300 Birr, if we don???t have the money they put us in jail??S life before Karuturi was easier than now. It is not good because when we take maize they punish us and they brought the defence force which makes life not easy for us.??? 90 year old Ojha Ojulu, inhabitant of Ilya, village opposite Karuturi. quote: ??sI was born here, I grew up here. We lost land, trees for building houses, food - we suffer from shortage of food. We???ve been to complain to the regional government, but they don???t answer us. People suffer from hunger. That never used to happen before Karuturi came. Children suffer form malnutrition ??" some had to be taken to hospital. That child (pointing) receives ???plumpi-nut??? to survive. I used to take wood to the market to sell to buy food. Now it is impossible.??? Robin Hammond / NOOR
