JERUSALEM - Hundreds of foreign heads of state, dignitaries and guests are gathered in Jerusalem for the opening of Israel's new Holocaust museum to commemorate the six million Jews exterminated by the Nazis. The gathering, which began at 6:00 pm (1400 GMT) to the sound of the 'Tikva,' Israel's national anthem, comes two months after international leaders gathered in Poland to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. The Yad Vashem memorial, dedicated to the six million Jews murdered by the Nazi regime during World War II, has spent the last 10 years creating the world's largest Holocaust museum to keep alive the tragedy of the past. Among those attending the ceremony are nine heads of state, six prime ministers and four foreign ministers -- the majority from Europe. They include the presidents of Poland, Switzerland and countries in the former Yugoslavia, the premiers of Belgium, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Romania and Sweden, and the German, Norwegian and Spanish foreign ministers. British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott, Russian security council chief Igor Ivanov and Vatican representative Cardinal Jean Louis Tauran are also in Jerusalem for the event Also attending the inauguration ceremony are New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Eli Weisel, President Moshe Katzav and Prime Minister Ariel Sharon who are expected to address the audience.
