(NYT11) TAOS, N.M. -- May 9, 2002 -- HIKING-TAOS -- Choosing a hike in the mountains around Taos, N.M. requires little science. You can use "adventure dowsing": close your eyes and poke your finger down on a trail map, and odds are the route you pick will wind past pinyon, black bears, and blood-orange Indian paintbrush, through cool alpine meadows or dusky, high-desert low county. The landscape is ineffably lovely. Bruce Ross and Diane Sawyer take in one of the best views of the town of Taos, from the top of Devisadero Trail in the Carson National Forest. The trail is said to be one of the most popular amongst locals. (Richard Scibelli/The New York Times)
