American photographer Richard Avedon works in his New York City studio in preparation for a major exhibition of his work thoughtout the years. The exhibit marks the publication of his book, AUTOBIOGRAPHY. Lying on the floor, Avedon examines proof prints sent over by his
printer, marks them with printing instructions and asks an assistant for his opinion as he hands him a small print. He paces like a cat around the studio looking at the prints and tries to structure an order for them in his mind. Then he calls Tina Brown, then the editor of The New Yorker. He is also shown standing and thinking about the photographs on the walls.
