Mat "Haji" Jailani talks in his 20 hectare (49 acre) palm oil grove. He is a smallholder oil palm grower â less than 40 hectares (98 acres).
Mr. Jailani used to blanket spray his plantation until Wild Asia convinced him to planted âhabitat islandsâ of beneficial plants to attract insect predators that eat pests that plague oil palm trees.
Mr. Jailani says that the trees look healthier since the change. When farmers blanket spray, the ground underneath is bare and prone to erosion. Allowing the grass to grow, his plantation is cooler and yields, on average, have remained the same.
He uses natural fertilizer he calls âbio juiceâ made from fish, food and vegetable scraps. Although he only recently heard about the EUDR, he is not worried. âif it can benefit my farm, I am fine with itâ, he says.
