They feed their chicks until they are old enough to fend for self
ANTARTICA ADORABLE images of a baby Gentoo penguin being fed by his mother were captured in Antarctica.
Gentoo penguins primarily feed on crustaceans, fish and squid.
Less than three months old, this baby penguin is not yet mature enough to fledge the nest and survive on his own.
To feed them, parents regurgitated their food into the chick’s mouth.
When the parent reaches its chick, and the food has been digested enough, it coughs the mixture back up, allowing the chick to eat it directly from the parent's bill.
These captivating images were snapped by wildlife photographer Remi Vacher (34) from France.
“After a few days in Antarctica, I was waiting to see my first penguins until we got to this female penguin feeding her chicks,” he said.
“It was such an interesting sighting as I did not know exactly how the chicks were fed.
“The way they fed them is quite unique to some birds, and seeing them in action was very special.
“I was quite satisfied that I was at the right place at the right time as I didn’t see this behaviour again during the rest of the trip.”
