PHOTO: EAST NEWS / WOJTEK LASKI Poland's Catholic Church has confirmed that the Vatican is looking into allegations of sexual harassment leveled against the Archbishop of Poznan, one of the highest ranking church officials in Pope John Paul II's ho meland. The allegations surfaced Saturday in Poland's Rzeczpospolita newspaper, which reported that Archbishop Juliusz Paetz has been accused by numerous priests and clerics of sexual harassment, citing unidentified priests. "Since the case described has been passed on to the Holy See, it will undoubtedly be clarified and solved," the church's press office said in a brief statement. Church officials declined to comment further. The 67-year-old archbishop, who is recovering from illness according to his spokesman Stani slaw Zasada, denied the allegations and claimed they were part of a campaign to defame him. "I have never harassed clerics or priests", he said in a statement. "I cannot mention names of those who accuse me because I have to show respect to their good name," he said. Paetz worked in the Vatican 19 67-1976 in the Bishops Synod Secretariat. He was nominated bishop in 1982 and archbishop in 1996 by John Paul II. In Rome, Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the Vatican had been informed of the allegations and was following the case "with great attention and responsibility in looking after the rights of all." With scandals rocking dioceses in several countries, Pope John Paul has begun speaking out, complaining last year that sexual abuse was "damaging" the church. Archbishop Juliusz Paetz with Pope JP II
