‘I’m gender-fluid – people don't recognise me or think I have a secret TWIN because of my different looks'
An influencer has revealed that people often mistake them for being a different person due to their gender-fluid looks – with social media users calling them a “shapeshifter”.
August, 28, grew up “confused” about their gender, experimenting with clothes, makeup and hairstyles in a bid to find a look that made them feel comfortable.
But over time, they realised that this changed day-to-day and started expressing themselves as gender fluid.
Now, they adapt their wardrobe by enhancing or modifying their facial features, along with wearing wigs, to align with their identity that day.
And it’s left August being mistaken for two different people, with them often having to introduce themselves more than once.
“I have met people multiple times and they didn’t know it was me seeing them again,” the data specialist told What's The Jam.
“At my previous job, I had to ‘meet’ a colleague three times until they finally realised I was the same person.
“Online, people think I’m two different people running my account or that I have a secret twin.
“For me, it validates my fluid identity. I appreciate the recognition of my diverse gender expression.
“The only thing I find humorous is the diverse reactions and treatment I receive solely due to the shifts of my gender expression.”
August, from Minnesota, US, started their journey five years ago.
Recently, they took to social media to demonstrate how clothes don’t equal gender.
In a clip posted on TikTok, which has racked up 16.1m views and 1.8m likes, they show how the same outfit can be styled in two different ways, to create two different gender expressions.
