Veterinarian Obadiah Sing’oei and farrier Saidi Mohamed treat injured and sick donkeys for free at the Lamu Donkey Sanctuary in Lamu Town, Kenya, on on August 24, 2023. Founded in 1370, Lamu is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the country. The streets are narrow here and traversing the island by car is impossible. Instead, there are thousands of donkeys used for transporting goods and people through the town.
Each month for a week a medical team called the Safari Doctors set sail through the Lamu archipelago to provide care to the most isolated and vulnerable populations. In their mission, the Safari Doctors are confronted with neglected diseases but also with the permanent threat of an armed group plaguing the region.
