Veterinarian Antonate Achieng Akuom provides care for injuries and disease, as well as vaccinations, to animals in the old town in Pate Island along the northern coast of Kenya’s Lamu District, on August 22, 2023. The donkey, an emblematic and historical animal in Lamu, takes center stage, followed by dogs, cats and cattle.
For the week of August 21 to 25, 2023, 1,131 patients from ten different villages were seen by the three doctors of the team and 283 animals spread across three villages were treated and vaccinated.
Each month for a week a medical team called the Safari Doctors set sail through the Lamu archipelago to provide care to the most isolated and vulnerable populations. In their mission, the Safari Doctors are confronted with neglected diseases but also with the permanent threat of an armed group plaguing the region.
