Nasze ciała to pole bitwy - NYT
Portrait of Heydi Garcia Giron, 34, in her bedroom in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, on April 14, 2019. When Giron says, "I am a warrior," she doesn't overstate her case. The 34-year-old mother of two survived a machete attack at the hand of her daughter's father, which nearly severed both her jugular and the nerves in one of her arms. She's now seeking safe haven in the United States from the violence that pocks her country, but the asylum process is slow and daunting. She has heard about the caravans, but doesn't want to risk her children's wellbeing by migrating without permission. And so she waits for the U.S. to open its arms. "I don't want my children's lives to be grey," Heydi says. "I want to break that chain and see the light." Violence against women is endemic in Central America, and in Honduras, it has a particularly high cost: Emergency contraception is outlawed, and so rape survivors can't prevent pregnancy; abortion is criminalized in all cases, and women who end pregnancies can face close to a decade in prison. The patriarchal culture that fuels violence, advocates say, is the same one that upholds some of the most extreme restrictions on reproductive rights in the world. All of this creates a climate in which many women see no option but to flee, risking their lives to travel to the United States.
