Sadi, 10 yrs old, Kutupalong camp. She lives with her mother and older brother who gave consent for photography. Her father is deceased. She carried this dress with her from Myanmar when the family fled. "I feel happy when I put these these clothes on. If I had money, I would buy shoes. Pink shoes. I painted the mehedi (henna pattern on her hands) myself". Her older brother bought her some of the accessories to please her. For the Rohingya refugees there are few ways to celebrate the end of Ramadan. Many people visited relatives and shared some extra food they managed to procure. The most obvious manifestation is the ambitious dressing up of girls in various forms of finery. Many of these "party dresses" had been carried from Myanmar during their flight eight or nine months earlier, an indication of how much they mean to the girls. For most of these portraits, the girls wavered between pride and shyness, posing for a few moments before fleeing the scene laughing. As persecution and poverty rob the individual of their identity and dignity, these photographs hope to restore a little of both for their subjects.
