The site is known for being the theater on May 1, 1947 of the massacre of Portella della Ginestra, with the murder of workers by the criminal gang of Salvatore Giuliano. Libera Terra ("Freed Land") is an Italian association born to promotes protest action against the Mafia phenomenon. After a social and productive rehabilitation of assets freed, the organization aims to obtain high quality products, which respect both the environment and the dignity of its workers.
