China, Yunnan, July 9, 2009 Major Upheavals. In the village of Xing Huo Shan, on the highlands covered by terraced crops overlooking the valley, the sky generously showers on the paddy fields. The Lahu farmers, underneath their plastic capes, are waiting for the rain to cease before they can return to their fields. The scene is unchanging, contemplative? and yet, the region is undergoing profound changes. Major plans have been elaborated to open up the region and increase the exchanges with Laos and Thailand, mainly through the establishment of major traffic arteries and the construction of several dams. Sous leur cape en plastique, les paysans Lahu attendent la fin de l'averse pour regagner leurs champs. Sccne immuable et contemplative? Et pourtant, la region connait de profondes mutations. Des plans de grande ampleur ont ete elabores pour la desenclaver et accroitre les echanges avec le Laos et la Tha?lande, notamment r travers de grands axes routiers et la construction de plusieurs barrages.
