Laos, Golden Triangle, July 9, 2009 The Golden Triangle Region, at the crossroads of Laos, Thailand and Burma. Six riverside countries: a dialog to share the resources. The Mekong ranks third among the Asian rivers and eighth worldwide with respect to its debit. Six countries share its basin (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Burma, and China) and need to cooperate in order to share resources which by 2025 will have to sustain 100 million people. The Mekong Commission was created in 1995 with the goal of conducting this dialog. It replaced the Mekong River Committee founded in 1957. Upstream, China and Thailand overtly state their ambitions to covet the river's tremendous hydro-electric potential. Laos, enclaved and underdeveloped, entered the race as well by constructing, with the aid of international partners, several dams on the river's tributaries, for the purpose of producing electricity, which will then be sold to its neighbors. The countries downstream are worried. Cambodia fears the disappearance of Lake Tonle Sap, a genuine fish pool fed by the floods. Vietnam fears a debit decrease as well, resulting in sea water ascent and the salinization of the delta, threatening the cultivated lands. Le Mekong est le troisicme fleuve d'Asie et le huiticme au monde par son debit. Six pays se partagent son bassin (Vietnam, Cambodge, Tha?lande, Laos, Birmanie, Chine) et doivent cooperer pour partager une ressource qui devra faire vivre, d'ici 2025, 100 millions de personnes. La Commission du Mekong a ete creee en 1995 pour animer ce dialogue. Elle succcde au Comite du Mekong fonde en 1957. En amont, la Chine et la Tha?lande ne cachent pas leurs ambitions et convoitent le formidable potentiel hydroelectrique du fleuve. Le Laos, pays enclave et sous-industrialise, est
