Historie znad Mekongu - Vu Images
China, Tibet, Chata, June 29, 2009 Close to Yanjing. The "Salt Well". The village of Chata, sitting at an altitude of 12,500 ft (3,800 m), used to be a major stopover on the ancient tea road between Yunnan and Tibet. The first salt deposits under the bed of the Mekong were said to have been discovered in the Ming period (1368 - 1644). These salt reservoirs originated in the fossil groundwater tables. Their exploitation has shaped the rivers' landscape across the eras. On both shores, stilt terraces were erected, made of wooden laths and ochre clay, creating this mosaic of saline lands. Lam Duc Hien / Agence VU
