“My boyfriend was in a car accident at 2am - I found him and pulled him out thanks to location sharing”
We are, as a nation, all addicted to our phones, and much is made of the pitfalls of technology.
But one woman has expressed her thanks to location-sharing technology after a tracking app helped her rescue her boyfriend from a car accident.
Megan Blyth, 21, an NHS ward caterer from Burstwick, was woken up at 2am by a call from her boyfriend James Fenton, 22, a delivery driver for Morrisons.
James had flipped his car swerving an animal, and was in a ditch stuck upside down in his car with only 9% phone battery.
Terrified, James called Megan, needing her to come to the scene and help him to get out of his car.
Megan was new to the area and started to panic as she had no idea where James was and how to get there.
Luckily, Megan remembered that earlier that evening, she had received a notification from location sharing app Life360 informing her that her boyfriend's phone was on low battery.
She asked James to check that his location was sharing on Life360 and luckily it was.
She followed the map and 10 minutes later arrived at the scene.
She helped her boyfriend out of his flipped car and luckily he just had superficial injuries, but the car was written off, and the accident has affected him emotionally ever since.
“My partner James and I started location-sharing via the app around a year into our relationship when we didn’t live together,” Megan explains.
“I had to drive over an hour to visit him so it brought us both peace of mind knowing he could see I was safe on each journey to and from his house and mine.
“It was a normal day and we’d both been to work. I went to bed at around 11:30pm and thought James was next to me asleep too.
“While I was asleep he’d gone for a late night drive which he did often, so I never worried about him.
“However this night, while James was driving, a deer ran into the road in front of him which caused him to swerve, flipping his car, crashing on the side of the road and getting stuck in a ditch.
“I woke up at 2am to a phone call from him saying he’d been in a car accident and asking me to come get him.
“He was panicking since his phone was dying and said he was in Beverley, an area I wasn’t familiar with near to where he’s from.
“James couldn’t describe his exact location to me as there were no street lights or houses – he was literally in the middle of nowhere.
“I felt so stressed and upset, since he was stuck inside the car and I didn’t know where he was or if he was badly injured.
“I suddenly remembered Life360 and I was quickly able to see his location on the app, as well as check his phone battery percentage – which now had just 9% remaining.
"Thankfully he was only seven minutes away so I used the app to navigate my way to him in my car.
“I was relieved to find him, but incredibly panicked when I found his car upside-down in a ditch off the road.
“I tried to push the car over and get his seatbelt off, but the fact it was stuck in the ditch and was windy made it seem impossible.
“It took 10 to 15 minutes to get him out, but over an hour for us to push the car over.
“The whole ordeal lasted until 3:30am.
“Miraculously he just had a few cuts and scrapes from the crash once he was out, though the car was written off.
“Luckily James didn’t suffer from any major physical injuries and we are grateful as it could have been so much worse, however the impact the accident has had on him is pretty significant.
“He drove for his job and loved being behind the wheel. He has always been a good and safe driver, so was immediately shocked by the accident.
“Although he now feels back to normal with driving, he can be quite nervous as a passenger.”
Megan explains that without the app James could have been there for hours.
Despite escaping the car with no major injuries, she was sure she would not have found him without the app in the pitch-black country lanes.
“If we didn’t have Life360, and I wasn’t able to see him on the map, I would never have found him as his phone was dying and he would have been trapped in the car for hours,” she adds.
“The crash was in such a remote place in an area I was unfamiliar with, so it would’ve been impossible to find him in the middle of the night.
"Thankfully his injuries were not major and we both had the app, otherwise the situation could have been so much worse.
“Following the accident, I encourage everyone to download Life360.
“It’s easy to use and has so many features, like crash detection that will alert your circle and emergency contacts if you are in an accident, which could turn out to be lifesaving in an emergency.”
