The short "Sunderland" long-range reconnaissance flying boat has four Bristol "Pegasus XXII" engines each of 850 H.P. armament includes multiple gun turrets fore and aft and two further gun positions in the top of the fuselage. Hence the aircraft is referred to as a "battleship of the air". With the four engines developing a total of 3,360 M.P. at 6,250 ft. It attains a maximum speed of 210 M.P.H. and has a range of approximately 2,000 miles. Aircraft of this type have, since the beginning of the war, covered several million miles in all weathers on the many hazardous duties of the coastal command, including the spotting and attacking of submarines, escorting convoys and locating enemy warships.
