Col. William J. "Wild Bill" Donovan, above, war-time commander of the "Fighting 69th" arrived in New York, August 4, 1940 aboard a camouflaged British flying boat, the Clare. He explained he was returning from Europe where he went on "a mission for the sect of the navy." He declined to discuss his trip and when asked if it was successful said "That's for the secretary of the naval to decide." The Clare's flight was a resumption of experimental trans-Atlantic flights for the British, interrupted by war. The ship first landed at Montreal. (AP Photo)
