Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has spent sometime in hospital after being struck in the face by a protester at a rally in Milan on Sunday 13th December. The 73-year-old suffered a broken nose, two broken teeth and a cut lip after being hit with a model statue of Milan's cathedral. His alleged attacker is 42-year-old Massimo Tartaglia, who reportedly has a history of mental illness. The attack came as Berlusconi was mingling with the crowd and signing autographs after speaking at a rally in the main square in Milan. Following the attack, TV footage captured a dazed looking Berlusconi being helped to his feet by aides and rushed to his car. With blood covering his mouth and face, the PM then got back out of the car in an apparent attempt to show his supporters that he was all right. Security bundled him back into the vehicle and he was taken to San Raffaele hospital. His attacker has since been charged with aggravated assault.
