With its isolation and windswept features many people might hesitate to call the tiny island of Papa Stronsay home. However, for one small band of monks that's exactly what it is. The tiny Scottish Orkney Island, which lies on the equivalent latitude of Anchorage, Alaska, was brought ten years ago by the Transalpine Redemptorists, an order of Catholic monks and priests. Today the island is home to Golgotha Monastery and is the base for 25 monks, from novices to priests, who hail from as far afield as Australia, Samoa, Singapore and the Ukraine. As well as the monastery buildings and chapel, the compound also boasts a fully working farm that is home to numerous sheep and cows.
