Croatia, Osijek, 09 November 2017 83 year old Stjepan Getto stayed in an institution for 27 years before being given an apartment in the town of Osijek, Croatia in 24 December 2014. He lives with his wife who he met in the institution. They married in 2016. They had been in a relationship for 15 years. He entered the institution voluntarily to tackle his battle with alcoholism. The only solution offered by social welfare at the time. Stjepan could have left the institution any time, but there was never a realistic option where he could live in the community but still have the mental health support he felt he needed. Talking about life in the apartment compared to life in the institution he says ??sI have freedom here. In the instituion it is impossible to have the chance to recover.??? ??sI have the right to love, because I married the person I love.??? 61 year old Jelica Getto stayed in an institution for 17 years before being given an apartment in the town of Osijek, Croatia in 24 December 2014. She lives with her husband who she met in the institution. They married in 2016. They had been in a relationship for 15 years. Jelica says she was claimed ??smad??? by psychiatrists and her family, her legal capacity was taken from her and she was taken by force to the ???Home for Mentally Ill Adults??? (now called ???Center for Community Based Services ??" I am just like you???). ??sThey took my will to choose??? says Jelica. In 2015 her legal capacity was returned to her by the courts.
