Croatia, Osijek, 09 November 2017 Zoran Stih met his wife Ruzica Vidakovic when they were staying at ???Center For Providing Services In The Community??? in Osijek, Croatia ??" a center for people living with mental health problems. They say it was love at first sight. ??sThey didn???t allow us to be together, but allowed us be on the same ward.??? Zoran says: ??sBefore I met her I was in the bottom wrung of life, now that I met her, I???m on the top of life.??? Zoran has lived with PTSD since he fought in the civil war. Ruzica talks about her first husband: ??sI was married and my husband was violent towards me and my children. He pointed gun at me and I had a nervous breakdown.??? Conditions at the institution were difficult. Ruzica said that the institution ??s??Sis a bad place where there is no freedom. In an istitution there is no possibility of recovery because there is no freedom.??? The lack of liberty was distressing but what they hated the most was the treatment by some of the staff. Uniquely, they fought back. They are the first beneficiaries in Croatia to take an employee of a psychiatric institution to court for verbal abuse. The employee told them: ??sYou are all crazy, I will slaughter you, and if now was the time of Hitler I would shoot you all.??? They were scared at first, but they decided to speak. The employee was asked to apologise, but refused. Zoran and Ruzica still fear great fear, but they are not backing down and have formally pressed charges. As part of a program led by the director of the center Ladislav Lamza, to move beneficiaries into the community, the couple left the institution in 2015 and moved into an apartment in the toen of Osijek. Zoran says: ??sI thought I might be in the institution for life.??? They currently live in their apartment without any support. Robin Hammond / NOOR
