White sugar silo. Tate & Lyle sugar factory, Silvertown, East London. Tate & Lyle was formed in 1921, with the merger of two British companies: Henry Tate & Sons, a sugar refining business started by Sir Henry Tate in 1872, in Love Lane Liverpool and Abram Lyle & Sons, a sugar refining business started by Abram Lyle in 1881, in Plaistow Wharf, East London. Henry Tate opened his sugar refinery on the banks of the River Thames in Silvertown, East London in 1878. This is still the site of Tate & Lyle Sugars' sugar refinery today. Thames refinery site is 45 acres. Refinery can take delivery of up to 1.1million tonnes of raw cane sugar. Tate & Lyle makes 650 different sugar and syrup products, 180 million packets of sugar a year (approx.. 0.5 million packs per day). Lyle's Golden Syrup has been produced in the same tin at Plaistow wharf in East London since 1885 - and has the Guinness World Record for longest unchanged brand packaging. ? David Levene / eyevine
