Rolling Stones rocker Keith still has books he borrowed from Dartford public library as a teenager - that he has never returned. Now the history buff is facing fines for not returning the books he took out over 50 years ago. Based on current late fees and administration costs the rock legend could be in the red to the tune of TWENTY THOUSAND POUNDS - and rising. Keith admitted: ??sI still owe fines from about 50 years ago, they will be astronomical by now." Keith, currently on a world tour 50 and Counting, felt at home at Dartford Public Library even though he was a teen rock'n roll rebel. he added: "To me it was a place where you get a hint there was a place called civilization. ??sIt was the only place where I would willingly obey the laws, like silence. It was somewhere where I could find out things where I wanted to find out about. "We weren't necessarily being taught at school,and you get a certain interest in something and you say I know where I find out more about this - and that would be the library. "In England all the libraries were designed by the same guy. "It was like the centre of things. And so it should be. You are not keeping all these books for nothing." Currently adults are charged 2p a day for late fees, but those fees rocket if members don't return their books and ignore admin letters. Council bosses usually give members three weeks grace, before dispatching letters about the missing books. If punters fail to respond a 10 pounds charge is slapped on them as well as the cost of the book. Administrators then fine them postage costs and administration fees for the time spent working on chasing their owed moneys. Keith's 50 plus late years of fees mean that with rates adjusted to reflect modern interest rates he owes five figures. Council execs would have to adjust his costs to take decimalization into account. A receptionist at Dartford library confirmed: "For something over 50 years that is going to be tough to find out exactly how much it is. "You would have to go to the archivist. "Usually the biggest fines we have are about one hundred pounds." Avid book reader Keith wrote his autobiography Life in 2010. After coming out it prompted a feud with band co-star Mick Jagger after he joked his lifestyle.
