Afghanistan, Kabul, 10 September 2021 Habib Farzad, a PhD candidate in sociology, was detained by members of the Taliban while attending a protest of mostly female students demanding civil rights on Wednesday. He was taken into a police station, forced to the floor, punched, kicked and beaten with electric cables and rifles-butts until he lost consciousness. Three other male protestors and two Afghan journalists from @etilaatroz covering the protests received the same treatment. The day before the protest, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid declared such protests - and media coverage of them - banned until further notice. The fighters responsible for the beating, Farzad says, told him "we've been merciful with you. Don't complain. We could behead you if we wanted."
