The Vatican called 19 May 2006 on the founder of the ultra-conservative Legion of Christ movement to give up all his duties with the organisation after accusations of paedophilia. A statement from the Vatican's top doctrinal body said its sanction against Father Marcial Maciel, an 85-year-old Mexican priest, had been approved by Pope Benedict XVI. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith said it had decided against an ecclesiastical trial because of Maciel's age and poor health but to "invite him to (lead) a discreet life of prayer and penitence, renouncing any public ministry."
