Daniel Dougherty, 58, at home in Queens, New York, Sept. 24, 2018. When a series of scandals involving the Roman Catholic Church unfolded in rapid-fire succession this summer, New York gasped. Dougherty was an active parishioner at the Church of St. Mary in Long Island City in Queens for 29 years, volunteering as an usher and attending Mass regularly. But he walked away two years ago at the behest of his younger brother who was sexually abused by a priest as a child. (Adam Ferguson/The New York Times)
