This undated artists concept taken from the NASA Internet site 26 September, 2000 shows a space elevator. The concept structure would extend from the Earth's surface to a geo-stationary Earth orbit(GEO). Its center of mass is at GEO such that the entire structure orbits the Earth in sync with the Earth's rotation maintaning a stationary position over its base attchment at the Equator. The structure is envisioned as part of a latter 21st century mass transpotation system.
