Lt. Jean Merot of France directs military fire via radio from the limb of a tree during "Operation Mandarin," in the Thai Binh area, 30 miles west of Haiphong, Indochina, between Oct. 5 and 9, 1951. The operation destroyed a great number of Viet Minh units in the area between the Red River and Bamboo Canal, which had been taken from the Viet Minh rebel forces some months earlier. Communist forces were beginning to percolate back and constituted a danger to traffic between Hanoi and Haiphong. "Mandarin" was a joint Vietnam-French operation. (AP Photo)
