French and Vietnamese troops wade across a canal during "Operation Brochet" in the district of Phung Yen, 60 kilometers from Hanoi, Indochina, Sept. 23, 1953. After the first phase, the operation was divided in two actions on both sides of the Bamboo Canal where they met the Viet Minh in fierce fighting. As of Oct. 1, 565 Viet Minh soldiers were killed, 431 were taken prisoner and 1,796 suspects were arrested. Large cache of arms, supplies and medical equipment were found. (AP Photo)
