Karl Doenitz, German naval commander in World War II, is pictured on his 80th birthday, Sept. 16, 1971, in front of his home in Auhmuehle, Germany. Hitler named the then-Grand Admiral Doenitz to be his successor and Doenitz did in fact preside for 23 days over the last phase of the Third Reich - his objective by then being "to end the war as quickly as possible." After the war he served a 10-year term for war crimes. (AP Photo)
