This National Archives photo taken between 1860 and 1865 shows former US General, Ulysses S. Grant as he poses for the camera. Grant was commanding general of all the Union forces during the US Civil War and was US President from 1869- 1877. The opening salvo of the American Civil War will be recreated on April 12, 2011 in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina, as part of events marking this week's 150th anniversary of the start of the conflict.
