In 1961, Byron R. White, left, was the deputy attorney general under Robert F. Kennedy. Mr. White helped in John F. Kennedy's 1960 presidential campaign and the two men had become become friends as Navy lieutenants in the Pacific. White went on to become a US Supreme Court justice.(George Tames/The New York Times)
