AP Historical Hard Drive 2009
In the best medieval tradition five young apprentice stonemasons are at work in 20th-century Manhattan, New York City, painstakingly chiseling Indiana limestone blocks. And the completion of the World???s largest Gothic structure is under way. The stones are to be used to build to build the last two towers of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, a #2 million program. It may be two or three years before the first stones are laid- as in medieval times, each stone is to be cut by hand on site, and 10,000 will be needed for each tower. The apprentices work under the tutelage of master mason Christopher Hannaway, using simple tools, mallets and chisels, most of which Hannaway brought from his native England in an undated photo.
