Dark horse Floyd Roberts of Van Nuys, Calif., veteran of 22 years of racing beams his happiness after winning the pole position for the Memorial Day 500-mile speed race, May 21, 1938 at Indianapolis. Roberts drove his car at 125.681 miles an hour to set a new 25-mile qualifying run record. His record was broken a day later by Ronney Householder (125.769 miles an hour), but Householder will have the inside position at the fourth row when the race begins. (AP Photo)
