Three German civilians, the first war criminals to be tried in Germany, were hanged at dawn on June 29, 1945 at the military prison at Rheinbach, Germany. All three were found guilty of the murder of an American Airman who parachuted to earth from his blazing bomber on August 15. The three men, Peter Back, a cripple and Rural Leader of the Nazi party; Peter John, one ??"armed German veteran, and Mathias Gierens, were defended at their trial by an experienced German Lawyer. Evidence was given by a villager who witnessed the crime. A fourth German involved was sentenced to life imprisonment. Catholic priest kneels in prayer before Mathias Gierens delivering the last sacraments, before the black hood is placed over his head and the executioner carries out sentence. (AP Photo)
